The Auto Grid Review
Isuzu MU-X Review: Our Verdict
The MU-X comes through our bay even less often than the V-Cross — it's a low-volume body-on-frame SUV with a dedicated, loyal following. The high bonnet and chunky wheel-arch cladding take road rash quickly on highway trips, and the chrome 'fanged' grille is a magnet for stone chips on front-on impacts with gravel. Climbing up to work on it is genuinely a two-step affair given the 230 mm ground clearance, and the blacked-out D-pillar is one panel we're careful never to buff too aggressively since the contrast finish shows polishing marks more than the body colour. Interior space is excellent for both second and third rows, and the owners we see are almost always planning a long highway or hill trip rather than daily city use.
What we like
- +Genuine body-on-frame toughness with a 7-seat cabin
- +360 Nm of torque and a relaxed highway gait
- +Spacious second and third rows for a vehicle this size
- +4x4 variant adds genuine off-road shift-on-the-fly terrain control
What we’d change
- –Not crash-tested by Global NCAP or Bharat NCAP — no published safety rating
- –Dated cabin design and materials versus the Fortuner and Meridian
- –Only automatic transmission available, no manual option
- –235-litre boot is tight with the third row in place
Is the MU-X right for you? Seven driver personalities, scored
Find the row that sounds like your driving life — that is the verdict that matters for you.
City Commuter
10–30 km a day through traffic
Too large, too heavy and too unwieldy for genuine daily city commuting in tight traffic.
Highway Cruiser
ORR laps and expressway weekends
A relaxed, torquey diesel and a body-on-frame ride make for a comfortable, if not quick, highway cruiser.
Family First
Four or five aboard, school runs to road trips
A genuinely spacious 7-seat cabin, but the lack of a published crash-test rating is a real gap against family-focused rivals.
Driving Enthusiast
Cares how it steers, not just how it looks
A loud engine and heavy steering mean this is built for toughness, not driving enjoyment.
First-Car Buyer
Budget-conscious and resale-aware
Price, running costs, size and the lack of a crash-test rating rule it out as a sensible first car.
Chauffeur-Driven Executive
Judged from the rear seat
Spacious but dated inside; an executive buyer will likely prefer the Fortuner or Meridian's cabin finish.
Weekend Explorer
Ghats, dirt tracks and monsoon roads
230 mm ground clearance, a 4x4 option and genuine body-on-frame toughness make it one of the most capable weekend-adventure SUVs sold in India.
Paint Protection
PPF for the Isuzu MU-X: What We Install and Why
Where it takes damage
The high bonnet and chunky wheel-arch cladding take road rash quickly on highway use; the chrome 'fanged' front grille is a magnet for stone chips, and the blacked-out D-pillar shows aggressive buffing marks more than the body colour.
Our recommendation
AG1 full-front with wheel-arch and grille protection for highway-heavy owners; avoid aggressive pre-film buffing on the D-pillar's contrast finish.
Coverage
Full front and grille standard; add wheel-arch guards for highway/off-road use.
Isuzu MU-X vs Fortuner vs Meridian
