The Auto Grid Review
Isuzu D-Max V-Cross Review: Our Verdict
The V-Cross is a niche but loyal arrival in our Kondapur bay — lifestyle pickup owners who take it seriously about protecting their investment, usually a Z Prestige 4x4 AT in Splash White or Red Spinel Mica. The tall bonnet and the deck's rear wheel-arch cladding take the first stone chips on highway and off-road runs, and the chrome door handles on Z Prestige trims scratch more easily than the body paint around them. Being a ladder-frame truck with a dated platform underneath current-generation V-Cross models elsewhere, the India-spec car's panel gaps are wider than a monocoque SUV's, which actually makes it easier to mask cleanly during film application. Owners who use the deck for genuine cargo duty ask us to pay special attention to the tailgate and rear bumper, which see the most scuffing from loading.
What we like
- +163 PS/360 Nm diesel with 4x4 and an auto-locking differential as standard (2026 update)
- +Genuine load-bay utility alongside lifestyle SUV comfort
- +Only direct rival is the pricier Toyota Hilux
- +Automatic variants add 6 airbags, cruise control and a 360-degree camera
What we’d change
- –Not crash-tested by Global NCAP or Bharat NCAP — no published safety rating
- –4x2 option discontinued for 2026, raising the entry price by over ₹1.2 lakh
- –India gets an older platform than markets with the latest-generation V-Cross
- –No official ground clearance or boot/deck-volume figure published
Is the D-Max V-Cross right for you? Seven driver personalities, scored
Find the row that sounds like your driving life — that is the verdict that matters for you.
City Commuter
10–30 km a day through traffic
Capable but oversized, heavy-steering and expensive to run as a daily city commuter.
Highway Cruiser
ORR laps and expressway weekends
360 Nm of torque and a relaxed diesel make it a comfortable long-highway cruiser, especially in the automatic.
Family First
Four or five aboard, school runs to road trips
No published NCAP rating and a 5-seat, 2-row cabin limit its appeal versus a dedicated family SUV.
Driving Enthusiast
Cares how it steers, not just how it looks
4x4 and genuine off-road hardware appeal to a driver who wants something different from the usual SUV crowd.
First-Car Buyer
Budget-conscious and resale-aware
Price, running costs, size and the lack of a crash-test rating rule it out as a sensible first car.
Chauffeur-Driven Executive
Judged from the rear seat
A pickup's cabin, ride and seating position are not built for a chauffeur-driven executive brief.
Weekend Explorer
Ghats, dirt tracks and monsoon roads
A genuine 4x4 with a load bay and an auto-locking differential makes this one of the most capable weekend-adventure vehicles sold in India.
Paint Protection
PPF for the Isuzu D-Max V-Cross: What We Install and Why
Where it takes damage
The tall bonnet and rear wheel-arch cladding take the first stone chips on highway and off-road use; the chrome door handles on Z Prestige trims and the tailgate/rear bumper (from loading) scratch more easily than the surrounding paint.
Our recommendation
AG1 full-front with wheel-arch and tailgate protection for owners who use the deck for genuine cargo; AG1 Square full body for Z Prestige lifestyle buyers who want the paint kept showroom-fresh.
Coverage
Full front and tailgate standard; add wheel-arch guards and full body for Z Prestige/lifestyle use.
