The Auto Grid Review
Nissan X-Trail Review: Our Verdict
The X-Trail is rare in our Kondapur bay — a handful of cars since its 2024 relaunch, almost always Diamond Black or Pearl White. Being a CBU import from Japan, the paint depth and panel fit are the best we see on any Nissan, closer in feel to a Japanese-market premium SUV than anything Nissan has sold here before. The flat bonnet and large flat doors are straightforward to film, but the chrome grille surround and the diamond-cut 20-inch wheels need careful masking, and the lower bumper takes stone chips quickly given the car's size and the owners' tendency to use it for longer highway trips. The 85-degree rear doors make our job easier when we need to access the second and third rows for interior protection work, which is rarer for us but appreciated when it comes up.
What we like
- +5-star Euro NCAP rating with 7 airbags standard
- +Genuinely flexible, usable 7-seat layout with 85-degree rear doors
- +CBU-import build quality from Japan
- +585-litre boot and 210 mm ground clearance are generous for the segment
What we’d change
- –13.7 km/l ARAI mileage trails hybrid-powered rivals like the Fortuner Legender
- –Only 3 colour options and a single trim
- –CBU import means long parts and service lead times outside major cities
- –Not separately crash-tested by Bharat NCAP or Global NCAP for the India-spec car
Is the X-Trail right for you? Seven driver personalities, scored
Find the row that sounds like your driving life — that is the verdict that matters for you.
City Commuter
10–30 km a day through traffic
Capable but oversized and expensive for pure city duty; the CVT is smooth but the car's size makes it a handful in tight Madhapur lanes.
Highway Cruiser
ORR laps and expressway weekends
163 PS and 300 Nm from the variable-compression engine give a relaxed, quiet highway cruise, though it isn't as quick as the diesel Fortuner.
Family First
Four or five aboard, school runs to road trips
A genuine 7-seat layout, 5-star Euro NCAP rating and 7 airbags make this one of the most family-friendly premium SUVs sold in India.
Driving Enthusiast
Cares how it steers, not just how it looks
Comfort and refinement over outright driving engagement — this is not a car built for a keen driver's weekend.
First-Car Buyer
Budget-conscious and resale-aware
Price, size and premium running costs put it well outside first-car territory for most Indian buyers.
Chauffeur-Driven Executive
Judged from the rear seat
Quiet, well-cushioned and spacious, though VW's Tayron and Skoda's Kodiaq offer more configurable rear-seat comfort at a similar price.
Weekend Explorer
Ghats, dirt tracks and monsoon roads
210 mm ground clearance and a genuinely flexible 7-seat cabin suit long family road trips well, though it remains front-wheel drive only.
Paint Protection
PPF for the Nissan X-Trail: What We Install and Why
Where it takes damage
The lower front bumper takes stone chips quickly given the car's size and highway use; the chrome grille surround and diamond-cut 20-inch wheels need careful masking during protection work.
Our recommendation
AG1 Square full body given the CBU import's long parts lead time and the premium positioning — we do not recommend a partial package on a car this expensive to repair.
Coverage
Full body standard, with wheel-face film for the diamond-cut alloys as an add-on.
Nissan X-Trail vs Kodiaq vs Tayron vs Fortuner Legender
Cross-shopped against: Škoda Kodiaq, Volkswagen Tayron, Toyota Fortuner Legender.
