Add the first three and you get XPEL's published 192µm figure "without release liner" — the number that actually ends up on your car. 3M's technical bulletin for Scotchgard Pro Series, by contrast, publishes "film with adhesive: 7.8 mil (0.20mm)" as a single combined figure for the ~203µm number widely quoted for that product, with the liner (3.0 mil) listed separately and not included. The practical takeaway: before treating any two brands' thickness numbers as directly comparable, check whether both are measuring the same thing — film-only, film-plus-adhesive, or film-plus-adhesive-plus-clearcoat. Notice the spread within a single brand — Garware and LLumar both range across roughly 20–25µm depending on which grade you choose, and AG1 Square's 221µm sits meaningfully above standard AG1's 192µm because it bundles in a standard top coat. Always confirm which specific grade or variant a quoted thickness applies to, not just the brand name.
Does Thicker Always Mean Better Protection?
Not automatically, and this is the point most thickness comparisons online skip entirely. A thicker film does have more material to physically absorb a stone-chip or gravel impact before that energy reaches your paint — that part is genuinely true. But real-world protection performance depends on several other factors working alongside thickness:
- TPU formulation quality: the base polymer's tensile strength and elongation properties (how far it stretches before tearing) matter as much as raw thickness for impact absorption.
